Our first project, which will be conveniently be dubbed the 'Triangle Project' was assigned without any solid concrete instructions nor guidelines. The only set directions we were given were that you had construct a triangle out of wood and handmade hinges while the rest was left to individual interpretation. The true intentions of the project were much more literal than I honestly had expected. The fact that we were working with only the initial knowledge that, 'yes, I'm working with a triangle, now how should I go at this?' kind of mindset led me to strayed off from that fact that you had to keep in consideration the physics of the structure and the symbolism achieved through representation.
My project had been part of a contribution for a collaboration between my classmates Serena and Cheslyn. We had built two triangles each so that we could ultimately construct them together to make a series of 6 to form a hexagon. Within this 6 triangles, there would be visual representations of the different parts of the day: afternoon, sundown, and nighttime. Aside from that, we also incorporated another recurring theme, 'amusement- park', which had included: a Ferris wheel, a roller-coaster, and a carousel. My part consisted of a carousel during nighttime while Serena had a roller-coaster during sundown and Cheslyn had a Ferris wheel during the afternoon.
I had attached a canvas to the back of the triangles which had been painted a gradient of dark blue to a dark violet as the foreground. Random splotches of light pink, white, and lilac were applied to give a loose image of clouds and then layered with stretched cotton balls half drenched with burgundy colored water; this was used to achieve a textured 3D look to this focal point. Each of our pieces had similar mediums used to create a feeling of unity, and these were the use of Popsicle sticks, wooden coil, string, and barbecue skewers. I had applied these media by making abstract animal/object figures out of dissembled Popsicle sticks to convey a literal subject and creating the framework with all of them combined. My piece is much more static as compared to Cheslyn's and Serena's which consist of much more loops, movement, and rhythm. I offer a more panoramic view to provide a more grounded, elongated look as my set of triangles are meant to go on the bottom of the other 4.
Overall, I believe that this project was a success in more ways than another. Not only were we able to make our pieces come together as shapes, were were able to bring them together as a series with a high interpretative, yet straightforward topic. Although we ran into some problems during the project, adequate decisions and changes were made to make the pieces successful.
